Chapter 3

The dev lifecycle

One thing, with you in the loop

Updated (this page's updates)

Draft. Written, but not yet complete or polished.

Everything you ship goes through the same lifecycle. But depending on what you're shipping, you can skip some of its stages.

The lifecycle has three parts. A spark makes you want to build or somehow change your software. When the work is new or uncertain, you shape it, working out what to build and how. Then you deliver it, one slice at a time, from a plan to production.

A one-line bug fix might go straight from spark to build, verify, merge, and deploy. A brand-new product uses every stage. Maintenance work, such as dependency upgrades, refactors, and flaky tests, fits the same lifecycle.

Over time, you'll come to learn which stages a change needs.
